Hi I’m Krista! I love cats, adventure, anime, and the beach. I’m also a new mom and learning to navigate work life and parenthood. Talk about transitions! I owe every parent before me a debt of gratitude. It’s not easy. But motherhood also inspires me. I want my daughter to have a mama that shows up, and it's made me value my creative community at Scholar that much more. Everyone is so nice, and having time away to focus on myself? Invaluable.

I got into marketing because I wanted to help artists tell their own stories, and I am passionate about helping newcomers to the industry find their voice. My favorite aspect of my job is writing, so semi-related; if you want to talk about good books, hit me up!

I started in creative production because I love art and learning about how things are made. I moved to marketing because now I love to tell everyone how things are made, especially with the incredibly talented people who make them. As for my own creative exploits, I write fantasy novels (which I hope to publish one day), and I paint. I love curating Pinterest boards with future story ideas. The novel I just finished is set in a bubblegum version of Blade Runner.

What does your office space look like?

I like spaces that make you happy. My house is mostly eclectic vintage, but my office space is filled with violet pastels and silly things I’ve picked up from travels or conventions. The room I would have made when I was a kid if I knew all this cool stuff existed.

What is your favorite thing about your role?

That I get to interact with so many people and work on so many different things. Every single day is a new challenge. Putting together a case study? I get to collaborate with the creative team. Organizing a speaking event? I get to help someone shine and meet people from all over the world. Social Line Up? Working across teams to think up the most enriching way to share news. Brand Positioning and PR? I get to work with the incredible heads of our company to bring my perspective to company-wide goals. It’s a pretty sweet gig.

How do you stay up to date with industry trends?

I love the niche Scholar slack channels, but other than that? I subscribe to newsletters. As someone working in the press, I know how much care and attention is put into curating stories. I take a handful of minutes every morning to read what’s new, and I share interesting articles with my team. Some letters I like: The Daily Carnage, Marketing Brew, Colossal, Fast Company, Social Media Today, LBB, Muse by Clios, Marketing Dive, Hyperallergic, & Adweek.

I also subscribe to industry events and awards: OFFF, D&AD, AICP, Shots, etc. It’s a long list, and some mornings, I only open one, but it’s easy enough to peruse when it’s delivered to your (digital) door.

Why is social media marketing so important?

It puts the power of communication back in the storyteller’s hands. Social media is a direct link to the community of folks who care about what you are doing and should be treated as such. Trust, authenticity, all those overused words you hear about “successful accounts” - they matter. Because social media is the direct link between your brand and the people who make your brand special, it should be fostered with intention and care.
